Teeth Grinding in Children

Identify Teeth Grinding

Every child has a different experience when it comes to teeth grinding. While some kids don’t show symptoms, bruxism (or teeth grinding) can lead to chipped teeth or worn-down enamel. Some kids will develop headaches, earaches and in severe cases, jaw pain that makes it difficult to chew and even open their mouths.

If you suspect your child grinds their teeth at night, let Dr. Kurt know at your child’s next appointment to get a diagnosis and learn about our treatment options. In addition, keeping up with 6-month cleanings will allow Dr. Kurt to identify signs of bruxism like tooth fractures or other damages to teeth.

Results of Teeth Grinding

Rarely does bruxism in kids result in lasting damage. However, the strain of excessive clenching of the jaw and grinding the teeth can cause headaches and jaw pain. It can also wear down tooth enamel which results in tooth pain and increased sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures.

Help Stop Teeth Grinding at Night

There are a number of reasons why kids grind their teeth at night including: stress, anxiety, hyperactivity, reactions to medication, teeth misalignment and any source of pain like growing pains, injuries, incoming teeth and more.  In some cases, Dr. Kurt will recommend a night guard to protect the teeth in cases where bruxism is causing damage.

You can help by watching out for common stress indicators like behavior shifts, sleep difficulties and sudden changes in appetite. If your child’s teeth grinding is a result of stress, identifying and addressing these stressors by talking to your child about them can help. Additionally, you can follow these soothing techniques around bedtime:

  • Avoid giving your child caffeine; especially before bedtime

  • Designate 10-30 minutes to establish a consistent bedtime routine (reading a book, listening to relaxing music, etc.)

  • Avoid screen time right before bedtime. In fact, The National Sleep Foundation recommends making your bedroom a screen-free zone.
