Options include:

1. Local Anesthesia - This is always the simplest option for sedation dentistry in Cache County, UT. It involves injecting a numbing medication around the area to be treated. This is often combined with nitrous oxide.
2. Nitrous Oxide - Also known as “laughing gas,” this can be a supplement to a local anesthetic. Since the patient remembers most of the procedure, it does not work well for children who are dental phobic or cannot sit still through dental treatment. This process is best used to reduce minor anxiety.
3. Oral Sedation - This can be a great option for a moderately nervous child when the planned treatment is expected to last a little longer. The child is given a syrup to drink which has a sedative effect to relax patients for the procedure. The medication often takes 20 minutes to work, so parents will need to take an active role in administering it to the child.
4. General Anesthesia - When children need a lot of dental treatment, or their fear is too great to accomplish treatment in the dental chair, general anesthesia is a comfortable and safe option for sedation dentistry in Cache County. This level of care can be rendered with the help of an anesthesiologist.

Amazing pediatric dental office! The staff is absolutely amazing. They are very well organized and have plenty of chairs to usually get the patient right back with minimal wait time. They distribute tokens to the kids and have a variety of prize vending machines. All of the assistants speak so sweet and cute with the kids and make it a fun place to be. They have tvs on the ceilings and let the kids choose the show. We usually see Dr. Kurt Vest.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Yes, when administered by a qualified specialist, sedation dentistry is incredibly safe. As a board-certified pediatric dentist, Dr. Kurt Vest has multiple years of specialized, advanced training beyond dental school focusing specifically on safely managing sedation and anesthesia for children. We follow the strict safety guidelines and monitoring protocols set by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD). For deeper sedation, like general anesthesia, we partner with a certified anesthesiologist so Dr. Vest can focus entirely on your child’s dental care while their vitals are expertly monitored.

  • Every child is unique, so we never take a "one-size-fits-all" approach. During your consultation at our Cache County clinic, Dr. Vest will thoroughly review your child's medical history, the extent of the dental work needed, and their anxiety level. For mild nerves during a short procedure, "laughing gas" (Nitrous Oxide) is often perfect. If your child is highly anxious, has special healthcare needs, or requires extensive restorative work, we will discuss options like oral conscious sedation or safe general anesthesia to ensure a gentle, "no-tears" experience.

  • Recovery depends on the type of sedation used. If your child receives Nitrous Oxide, the effects wear off almost immediately after we turn off the gas, allowing them to return to their normal daily routine right away. For oral sedation or general anesthesia, your child will feel groggy or sleepy for a few hours after the appointment. We will provide you with detailed post-operative care instructions, including when it is safe for them to eat and drink, and how to monitor them closely until the medication completely leaves their system.
