5 Things Your Dentist Does At Every Checkup

Ever wonder what exactly your dentist is doing when you come in for a checkup every couple of months?  You may think it is just a cleaning, but there are a lot of things your dentist is looking for that you might not even know about.  Wasatch Pediatric Dentistry is here to share exactly what Dr. Kurt will be doing during your appointment.

  1. Examining Your Tounge

At your appointment, your dentist will take a look at your tongue to check if you have a healthy mouth.  The size and surface of your child’s tongue can give us signs about their oral health as well as their overall health.

  1. Examining Your Bite

The dentist can see if your teeth have moved recently by examining your bite and the alignment of your teeth.  Your dentist will be able to tell if braces would be appropriate for your child’s bite or smile & recommend a great orthodontist for you.

  1. Checking Your Gums

During a dental checkup your dentist will examine your gums.  We look for swelling or bleeding, as well as large gum pockets.  These are all potential indicators of unhealthy gums or even gum disease.

  1. Looking at Every Tooth

Your dentist will take a close look at each and every visible tooth.  They will use a mirror and a tool to see them and check them for any possible concerns.  Your dentist will be looking for the strength of your teeth or the signs of other dental issues such as grinding, nail biting, or chewing on objects.

  1. Educating on Proper Dental Care

Here at Wasatch Pediatric Dentistry Dr. Kurt is happy to spend the extra time to make sure your family knows how to properly care for your teeth.  Learn the best brushing techniques, how you should be flossing, when to brush, and what products are best.

Dental checkups are so much more than a simple teeth cleaning appointment!  It is super important that your dentist regularly checks your oral health.  Developing good dental habits as a child can set you up for a lifetime of success.  Ready for your next appointment?
